About the project
Reinterpreting Lanna Architecture
Located in Chiang Mai, Khum Phaya Resort and Spa was designed around a study of traditional Lanna architecture. Before beginning the project, Niwat Architects researched Lanna houses and their architectural characteristics, looking for a contemporary direction for a style more commonly found in older temples and traditional wooden houses.
The design takes particular inspiration from the Lanna tradition of teak wood carving. Teak is used extensively throughout the resort, including an approximately 80-year-old teak wood roof. Traditional Thai architectural elements also influence the building forms, interior decoration, furniture, and details throughout the guest rooms.
The landscape is closely connected to the architecture. The resort includes a collection of mythological trees and flowers, with some trees more than a hundred years old. A 110-meter swimming pool runs through the centre of the resort, connecting different areas and guest rooms while becoming an important part of the landscape.
Khum Phaya Resort and Spa was conceived as a place where guests could experience Lanna architectural character through buildings, craftsmanship, interiors, and landscape.
