About the project
A Lanna Village Along the Ping River
The idea for Marndadee Heritage River Hotel began with the owner’s collection of antiquities, artwork, and old wooden rice barns. Rather than treating these pieces as separate objects, we wanted to give them a setting where they could belong together.
The project was imagined as a local Lanna village along the Ping River. Buildings were arranged as a collection of spaces rather than one large hotel structure, allowing the architecture, gardens, and existing character of the site to work together.
Different Lanna architectural influences were used throughout the project, including Lanna Colonial, local Lanna, and Chinese Lanna. Each has its own character, but together they create a varied architectural landscape with the feeling of a place that has developed over time.
The landscape is an important part of the experience. Paths lead guests between buildings, gardens and shared spaces, while the collection of old structures and objects gives the hotel a strong connection to Northern Thailand.
